As my last post outlined, I have had a very interesting Lean Healthcare Week and wanted to share the main lessons with you!

On Monday we ran a Scoping Session around a programme focused on 'Outpatients'. Setting out your plan for your Lean Healthcare programme from the start is essential to the long-term success of your programme. Scoping is the start of the improvement process for us!

On Tuesday morning, we were presenting to a University Hospital on a Lean Healthcare programme they are looking to tender and our message was simple and clear, if you do Lean in Healthcare the way that you do Lean in Manufacturing you run the risk of killing people.

Tuesday afternoon I met with an Acute Trust in the East Midlands to discuss their Lean Healthcare programme as the person driving it was concerned that they did not have the best structure to ensure their programme would be a success.

Lastly, from Wednesday to Friday I was working with an entire Local Health Economy, including an Ambulance Trust, PCT, Acute Trust and Social Services to redesign their 'Urgent Care' pathways. Because we had the highest level of clinical input I have ever had as part of the redesign process we had one of the best outcomes and we were highly challenged in a public forum, enabling us to tackle their concerns and build them in rather than having 'death by a thousand cuts' after the event! The message here being that Clinical Input is essential to the success of your Lean Healthcare Programme.
