I promised to update the blog after we had undertaken the experimental exercise to apply Lean Healthcare to a reduction in Medication Risk as opposed to simply Service Redesign and although it was a fraught and stressful journey, with the support of the nursing and medical staff as well as the National Patient Safety Agency we have managed to apply Lean Healthcare (and particularly VSAs) to the reduction in Risk.

I was chatting to one of the Change Agents within one of the clients we are working with this week and we were discussing the fact that he was struggling to engage his line manager in the process.

The programme is being driven from the board of the organisation and the line manager was part of establishing the team but has never really engaged with the process and it is having a very negative effect on the Change Agent who says he is thinking of giving up being involved in the programme.

If 2007 was the year for acquiring the skills of Lean and experimenting with your first projects, then 2008 should be the year for learning how to embed these skills inside your organisation.

A Lean Healthcare organisation is one that is continuously improving and not just one that can reliably apply the tools. This requires some work to be done on structuring your programme, communicating with your staff, applying resources and engaging your front line teams in implementation activities.
